Next Board Meeting:

TBA (generally 1st Tuesday of the month, but may be changed to accommodate Labor Day vacationers)

Special alert:

We always knew corporate interests and right-wingers would fight back hard against healthcare reform.

But did we think it would get this bad?

In light of the disruption and intimidation at Congress members' recent town hall events, we want to share with you the following list of upcoming L.A.-area meetings.

If you care about civil discourse, if you want healthcare reform that will make people's lives better (rather than enrich insurance companies, drugmakers and other corporate interests), please plan to attend one or more of these meetings and stand up for the things you believe in.

Otherwise we are giving in to the forces allied against us.

Here's the sad thing: Bringing you this list took a bit of searching.  And what rose to the top of the search engines were not Democratic, progressive, left-leaning sites.... No, the Republicans are taking the lead. Let's take it back.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TOWN HALL MEETINGS

Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard

•    8/8   9am - 2pm

Open Foreclosure Forum* - Downey Adult School, 12340 Woodruff Avenue, Downey

Rep. Henry Waxman

Climate Change Forum* - Korn Hall, University of California, Los Angeles, 110 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles

[*Billed as forums on other topics, but the agenda could certainly change depending on who shows up.  The anti-reform crowd seem to be planning to attend.]

And keep the pressure on by calling and demanding true healthcare reform every day you can find a couple of minutes to pick up the phone.

Contact your Senators and Representatives by clicking here.

Keep it simple and polite, speak your mind, and you're done.  Unless you'd like to take some extra time and write letters to the editor, spread the word to friends, post your opinions in online forums. Conservatives are doing this with gusto, giving them influence out of proportion to their actual numbers...  It's up to us to even the score.

We're also working to bring you improved content, topical and frequently updated, on the site. Check back often to see what one of the largest and most active Democratic clubs in California is up to: parties, speaker forums, film screenings, etc.

And feel free to contact us about sitting in on one of our board meetings—generally the first Tuesday each month—if you'd like to get involved.  We'd love to tell you more.

We are sure there will be a lively discussion of the proposed

Councilmember Bill Rosendahl will join community leaders for a discussion on California’s need for a constitutional convention and the impacts it would have on the state’s economy and its ability to function.

On July 1, the State of California entered a new fiscal year without having enacted a budget to fund state services.  As a result, the state has been forced to issue IOUs to contractors and municipalities, at a great cost, both financially and in terms of service, to California taxpayers.  To prevent similar budget crises in the future, Rosendahl will discuss the merit of a California Constitutional Convention to enact necessary reforms to the state constitution.

In 1978, the passage of Proposition 13 greatly redefined California’s budget process.  Along with its reduction in state revenue through property taxes, the proposition imposed a 2/3-majority in both Houses of the State Legislature in order to pass a budget.  As a result, the state has not had an on-time budget for the last several decades.  In 1990, term limits were imposed on legislators by voters, further complicating the budget process.

Discussion of these issues and many others, their impact on the budget process, and the potential and need for reform will be highlighted at the forum.  It will provide the public an opportuni ty to weigh in on the issues, and to address whether California should hold a constitutional convention in the near future to reform the process.
