We need your help.  PPDC endorses the California Majority Campaign,
an organizing effort to break CA's legislative gridlock by eliminating the Two-Thirds Rule
that requires a supermajority to pass a budget and makes good governance nearly impossible.

There's a new wrinkle in the campaign as of April.
Next step: Send a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown.
Learn how and why by clicking here.

You can read about the idea that helped launch the campaign on this page of The Huffington Post

a brainstorm by linguist/Democratic strategist George Lakoff.

Noted Author & Scholar

Presenting his New Book
Apocalypse Never:
Forging the Path to a Nuclear Weapon-Free World

Thursday, July 15, 2010
7:00pm - 9:00pm

At the home of Tom Camarella and Ronnie Jayne

4170 1/2 Madison Avenue
(go up driveway to back house)
Culver City, CA 90232

Come at 6:30pm to meet the author, have a glass of wine
and schmooze with friends

On the wings of a brand new era in American history, Tad Daley's brand new first book (May 2010) "Apocalypse Never"
makes the case that a comprehensive nuclear policy agenda from President Obama,
one that fully integrates nonproliferation with disarmament, can both eliminate immediate nuclear dangers
and set us irreversibly on the road to abolition.

"Apocalypse Never is an important and path-breaking book.
Tad Daley [click for bio] doesn't just look at why we should strive to eliminate nuclear weapons, he demonstrates how to make it happen.
This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand how to turn a grand vision into a political reality."

-John Podesta, President and CEO, Center for American Progress; White House Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton.

 This Event is FREE !
For a personally-inscribed book, the cost will be $23, cash or check only.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

The Summer Conference

PNHP California is pleased to announce The Summer Conference, our first annual conference for the California single payer community. The conference is a collaborative effort of many organizations from the State Strategy Group and includes a full lunch and dinner buffet with presentations from state and national leaders in the single payer movement: Walter Tsou, Don McCanne, Margaret Flowers, Mark Leno, Sheila Kuehl, Michael Lighty, Paul Song, Andrew McGuire, Paul Hochfeld and more.

Tickets are available at Event Brite for $95.50 for day and evening, or $65 for the day program and $45 for the evening program. We also have The $10 Deal for non-physicians that includes access to all the educational programs and educational materials but no meals. Through May 21
Organized by a coalition of anti-war organizations.

Please call your senators and representative and ask them to vote against continuing and escalating the Afghanistan war.

Call 202-224-3121.

Tell them it is time to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan, not increase them.
It is time to stop pouring billions of borrowed dollars into a failed and unecessary war -- dollars the U.S. needs to borrow at a time of record debt.

Also ask your elected representatives to support H.R. 5015, Redeployment of U.S. Troops from Afghanistan, and its sister bill in the Senate, S. 3197.
These bills would require the President to provide a plan and timetable for "the safe, orderly, and expeditious redeployment of US troops from Afghanistan."

These bills are critical first steps for the U.S. withdrawal effort.
Sen. Russ Feingold and Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Walter Jones (R-NC) are leading this legislative effort.

You can see the list of co-sponsors, now more than 80 in the House, by

Calling all "YES on PROP 15" supporters

Join in the fun at the Doo-Dah Parade
to support the California Fair Elections Act

 May 1, 2010, 9am to 3pm

The Pasadena Working Group will have an entry in the Doo Dah Parade to help show everyone why we need to get politicians out of the fundraising game and you can help. If you are not familiar with the Doo Dah Parade, it's a parody of the Rose Parade, and the entries all have a fun and irreverent quality to them. We should also be getting some good press coverage and exposure for the Yes on Prop 15 Campaign.

The Parade route is under a mile and it will take about an hour to walk it. But we have to be there early for sign in. There is a $10/marcher fee. A more detailed information sheet will be sent out once we get all the information from registration. But we know now that we need bodies!!!

We will need need 2 volunteers to walk with the "Yes on Prop 15" banner at the front of our group, and someone with a megaphone announcing our rally call.

We will need at least one (hopefully more) volunteers dressed/labeled as politicians (suits, etc) but with a dog leash and/or strings attached to them.  The strings will be held by volunteers dressed/labeled as corporations or special interests.  The "corporations" will clearly be pulling the politician away from the crowd making making them do things.

We will need a separate group of volunteers handing out leaflets.  The more the better.
We will need other volunteers who are carrying our rally signs and generally yelling and cheering for Yes on Prop 15 (probably when the megaphone person asks for a cheer).

We need your ideas and your hands to create all the costumes!

We will be having a prep meeting on April 24 from 10am to 1pm at:
Hill Avenue Branch
55 South Hill Avenue
Pasadena, CA, 91106
This is where we will be preparing the final costumes and coordinate our efforts. If you can march in the parade but can't make the prep meeting, that's OK, please send us an email at

Untangling Citizens United
and the Future of Campaign Finance Reform

 Liberty Hill Foundation
2121 Cloverfield Blvd., Suite 113, Santa Monica, CA 90404

After the disastrous Citizens United decision earlier this year, President Obama warned that the Supreme Court's ruling would unleash a flood of corporate spending in political campaigns.

So what are the ramifications for the 2010 elections?  And what does the ruling mean for campaign finance reform efforts?  What legal arguments for and against reforms will prevail under this "New Court Order"?

Speakers at this informative panel include:

Grant Davis Denny, campaign finance legal expert, Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP
Jessica Levinson, director of political reform, Center for Governmental Studies
Stephen J. Kaufman, campaign finance legal expert, Kaufman Legal Group
Kelli Shope, attorney, Los Angeles City Ethics Commission
Kathay Feng (moderator), executive director of California Common Cause

This event is free and open to the public.
Registration is required because seating is limited. Hors d'oeuvres will be served.

March 20 is the seventh anniversary of the criminal war of aggression

one million or more Iraqis have died.
tens of thousands of U.S. troops have lost their lives or been maimed
and continue to suffer a host of enduring problems from this terrible war.

This is the time for united action.  The slogans on banners may differ, but
all those who carry them should be marching shoulder to shoulder.

    National Call-in Day for Medicare-for-All:
Thursday, Feb. 25

A contributing factor to Congress' failure to pass healthcare reform is that what is being offered as reform will not solve the healthcare crisis in this country, is too complicated to understand and is too costly in this economic climate.

No wonder Americans losing their jobs are not engaged on this issue--they're worrying about a roof over their heads and where the next bag of groceries will come from.
Polls indicate the majority of Americans want Medicare-for-All.  Despite all the recent activity around the "public option," it is still only a very costly band-aid.
On Feb. 25, tell your member of Congress that now is the time to pass Medicare-for-All.

To begin, click here and enter your zip code for contact #'s and talking points.

Marcy Winograd, a veteran public school teacher, is challenging Jane Harman in the 36th Congressional District (West LA to San Pedro).  Winograd is a life-long peace activist who mobilized almost 38% of the vote in 2006, when she jumped into the primary race three months before the election.  In her role as a founding member of the Progressive Caucus in the California Democratic Party, Winograd has put the Party on record calling for an end to the US wars and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.  To prepare for the future, Winograd's platform calls for transitioning from a permanent war economy to a New Green Economy.  To learn more about her campaign, visit: Winograd4Congress.com

PROGRESSIVE VALUES & ISSUES:  What are they?  How do we support them  and get support for them?
BETRAYAL?: Woolsey's Baffling Endorsement of 'Blue Dog' Harman Riles Progressives

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) and board member of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), has confounded progressives by joining forces to support notorious 'Blue Dog' Democratic Rep. Jane Harman in her upcoming primary against PDA-backed Marcy Winograd of the grassroots progressive organization.

Join Marcy and Fellow Winograd Supporters for a rally

Jobs, Not Wars!
Venice Votes Winograd

Saturday, January 16, 2010,  from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Corner of Abbot Kinney & Westminster Ave.

We will make our presence known at this well-trafficked corner with positive messaging about our candidate.
Please bring your friends, energy, signs, clipboards and pens.

Once we have established a healthy presence, we'll dispatch volunteers to pass out fliers and lawn signs and gather petition signatures to get Marcy on the ballot.

Wear your Winograd t-shirts and buttons.

This is our opportunity to show the area's support for Winograd; Marcy's explicit request is that we create a positive rally -- no signs about the opposition.

HELP NEEDED to make several large banners Saturday morning in Mar Vista, 10:00.   Please email Sheri Myers at  blindhug@yahoo.com.  If anyone has a telescoping tent pole or painter's poles to donate to the campaign, we could use that for the banners.  If you have paints, rope, brushes & rolls gaffer's tape, bring `em!

ALSO SEEKING graphic artists for other large (more arty) banners, House Party invites, Bake Sale invites, etc.

We need many smaller signs that display the Progressive values and encourage people to vote on 6/8/10 for Marcy.

Topanga Peace Alliance Monthly Film Night
Friday, January 8, 2010
Potluck 7:45pm, screening 8pm

TPA Film Night presents Life in Occupied Palestine
at Yoga Desa in Pinetree Circle
 120 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd, 90290

Life in Occupied Palestine is an award-winning film by Anna Baltzer,
a Jewish-American woman who traveled through the West Bank interviewing Palestinians
living in what she regards as "Occupied Palestine."

The film provides an excellent introduction—in a down-to-earth, non-alienating way—to the nonviolent movement for freedom and equality in the Holy Land.
