Recent issues & events, pre-August 2010:
We need your help. PPDC endorses the California Majority Campaign, an organizing effort to break CA's legislative gridlock by eliminating the Two-Thirds Rule that requires a supermajority to pass a budget and makes good governance nearly impossible. There's a new wrinkle in the campaign as of April. Next step: Send a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown. Learn how and why by clicking here. You can read about the idea that helped launch the campaign on this page of The Huffington Post— a brainstorm by linguist/Democratic strategist George Lakoff. ![]() George Lakoff ******* Sunday, July 25th at 7:30PM COME JOIN BILL MAHER Alongside 4 Fabulous Ladies LILY TOMLIN - PAULA POUNDSTONE Geri Jewell - Kathy Buckley with celebrity guest David L. "Apocalypse Never is an important and path-breaking book. Tad Daley [click for bio] doesn't just look at why we should strive to eliminate nuclear weapons, he demonstrates how to make it happen. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand how to turn a grand vision into a political reality." -John Podesta, President and CEO, Center for American Progress; White House Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton. Please call your senators and representative and ask them to vote against continuing and escalating the Afghanistan war. Call 202-224-3121. Tell them it is time to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan, not increase them. It is time to stop pouring billions of borrowed dollars into a failed and unecessary war -- dollars the U.S. needs to borrow at a time of record debt. Also ask your elected representatives to support H.R. 5015, Redeployment of U.S. Troops from Afghanistan, and its sister bill in the Senate, S. 3197. These bills would require the President to provide a plan and timetable for "the safe, orderly, and expeditious redeployment of US troops from Afghanistan." These bills are critical first steps for the U.S. withdrawal effort. Sen. Russ Feingold and Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Walter Jones (R-NC) are leading this legislative effort. You can see the list of co-sponsors, now more than 80 in the House, by clicking here. ******* SPRING CLEANING FOR MARCY Bake Back the Democratic Party! If you are not familiar with the Doo Dah Parade, it's a parody of the Rose Parade, and the entries all have a fun and irreverent quality to them. We should also be getting some good press coverage and exposure for the Yes on Prop 15 Campaign. The Parade route is under a mile and it will take about an hour to walk it. But we have to be there early for sign in. There is a $10/marcher fee. A more detailed information sheet will be sent out once we get all the information from registration. But we know now that we need bodies!!! We will need need 2 volunteers to walk with the "Yes on Prop 15" banner at the front of our group, and someone with a megaphone announcing our rally call. We will need at least one (hopefully more) volunteers dressed/labeled as politicians (suits, etc) but with a dog leash and/or strings attached to them. The strings will be held by volunteers dressed/labeled as corporations or special interests. The "corporations" will clearly be pulling the politician away from the crowd making making them do things. We will need a separate group of volunteers handing out leaflets. The more the better. We will need other volunteers who are carrying our rally signs and generally yelling and cheering for Yes on Prop 15 (probably when the megaphone person asks for a cheer). We need your ideas and your hands to create all the costumes! We will be having a prep meeting on April 24 from 10am to 1pm at: Hill Avenue Branch 55 South Hill Avenue Pasadena, CA, 91106 This is where we will be preparing the final costumes and coordinate our efforts. If you can march in the parade but can't make the prep meeting, that's OK, please send us an email at pasadena-info@caclean.org ******* ![]() ******* Untangling Citizens United and the Future of Campaign Finance Reform Friday, May 7, 2010 11:30am to 2:00pm Liberty Hill Foundation 2121 Cloverfield Blvd., Suite 113, Santa Monica, CA 90404 Please plan to use street meters or residential street parking After the disastrous Citizens United decision earlier this year, President Obama warned that the Supreme Court's ruling would unleash a flood of corporate spending in political campaigns. PROGRESSIVE VALUES & ISSUES: What are they? How do we support them and get support for them? BETRAYAL?: Woolsey's Baffling Endorsement of 'Blue Dog' Harman Riles Progressives Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) and board member of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), has confounded progressives by joining forces to support notorious 'Blue Dog' Democratic Rep. Jane Harman in her upcoming primary against PDA-backed Marcy Winograd of the grassroots progressive organization. Venice Votes Winograd Saturday, January 16, 2010, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Corner of Abbot Kinney & Westminster Ave. We will make our presence known at this well-trafficked corner with positive messaging about our candidate. Please bring your friends, energy, signs, clipboards and pens. Once we have established a healthy presence, we'll dispatch volunteers to pass out fliers and lawn signs and gather petition signatures to get Marcy on the ballot. Wear your Winograd t-shirts and buttons. This is our opportunity to show the area's support for Winograd; Marcy's explicit request is that we create a positive rally -- no signs about the opposition. HELP NEEDED to make several large banners Saturday morning in Mar Vista, 10:00. Please email Sheri Myers at blindhug@yahoo.com. If anyone has a telescoping tent pole or painter's poles to donate to the campaign, we could use that for the banners. If you have paints, rope, brushes & rolls gaffer's tape, bring `em! ALSO SEEKING graphic artists for other large (more arty) banners, House Party invites, Bake Sale invites, etc. We need many smaller signs that display the Progressive values and encourage people to vote on 6/8/10 for Marcy. ******* Topanga Peace Alliance Monthly Film Night Friday, January 8, 2010 Potluck 7:45pm, screening 8pm TPA Film Night presents Life in Occupied Palestine at Yoga Desa in Pinetree Circle 120 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd, 90290 Life in Occupied Palestine is an award-winning film by Anna Baltzer, a Jewish-American woman who traveled through the West Bank interviewing Palestinians living in what she regards as "Occupied Palestine." The film provides an excellent introduction—in a down-to-earth, non-alienating way—to the nonviolent movement for freedom and equality in the Holy Land.
